In this page, I watched this Linkedin learning course on glyphs as requested from my lecturer Eli. Below I wrote notes on each section I watched, and then at the end I did some exercise files, and finally I did the 10 letters I was assigned.

Introduction to Type

Anatomy: The Parts of Letters

Letters are made up of strokes, stroke was used to hand draw letters, there are four types, the vertical, the diagonal, the curve and the horizontal. so up right down left. You’ll notice that the serif (Up and Down) of a letter is balanced with their brackets. The lowercase L here has two things, the Ascender Line and the Baseline, An ascender line is a typographical term that refers to the invisible baseline grid line that marks the maximum height of ascenders in a typeface. And the baseline is the imaginary horizontal line upon which most letters and characters sit

A jot is the small dot placed above lowercase letters, specifically shown on the 'i' and 'j’

A shoulder is the curved stroke extending down from a vertical stem, illustrated on the letter 'n'.

The x-height means the horizontal reference line that marks the top edge of standard, flat-topped lowercase letters (such as 'n', 'u', 'm', and 'r').

The descender line is the lowest horizontal line, marking the maximum downward reach of a letter's lower stroke, like the tail of the 'j'.

The terminal is the very end of a stroke that does not end in a serif, pointed out at the tip of the letter 'r'.

Of course there is more, but after watching the video, I felt like what matters most was what was in my notes, I still watched the video as it is interesting, I just don’t feel like writing every single bit of note.

The Parts of Fonts

After letters, there are characters like punctuation, numbers, symbols etc. when you open glyphs you will have 53 characters. It is up to me to add them, it is easy to do:

  1. Go to categories
  2. Select one of them (Decimal Digits)
  3. Left click or ctrl click
  4. Select all and generate
  5. Then in categories press all, so you can see them all
