What is a Resource Pack?

A resource pack is a curated collection of essential items, information, support tools designed to help prisoners being released to transition better into community. It usually has basic necessities like toiletries, phone credit, maybe some key info on housing, healthcare and support services.

Often included in these packs are:

• Essential items like basic toiletries, food, maybe a mobile phone
• Information, Detailed guides on accessing support, housing, registering with GP, and jobs
• Documents and Checklists

These packs are crucial for ensuring that individuals leaving prison are not released into homelessness and can access immediate support for their health and welfare.

Through my research, I found that these resource packs have been done before to assist with prison release, they’re used to support individuals with the transition to life outside, manage anxiety, and provide essential items.

The Wise Group

Here are some similar cases of this idea I found:

• COVID-19 Response: During the pandemic, organizations like the Wise Group developed Liberation Packs for individuals released early to help them navigate challenges like housing and benefits.
• Charity and Support Initiatives: Organizations such as Recoop create resettlement packs specifically designed for older prisoners (over 50) to provide information on housing, doctors, dentists, and local services.
• Young People's Support: Nepacs (North East Prisoner Family Support) developed a specialised resource pack designed for young care leavers, focusing on practical life skills, housing, and rights.
• Essential Items: The Prison Advice and Care Trust has provided release packs that include basic, immediate needs like toiletries, and have facilitated grants for items such as bedding and microwaves.

The Wise Group

These packs typically address the basics that, if someone who just got released missed out on, It can lead to reoffending. Basics such as accommodation, financial assistance, and personal hygiene items.
