Researching

Before I start designing a portfolio, I first need to figure out what makes a portfolio. So to do this, I’m going to look at existing ones and write a small case study about it, Daniel was kind to share some portfolios he found on linked in

The first thing I noticed was there is no navigation tabs at the top, which is interesting, Adrian has seemed to focus more on his work, you do have the option of contacting him through his website with the say Hi part, but there’s no email. However there is socials at the bottom. I do like the monospace typography, But if I’m honest this is a nightmare to navigate, I feel like I’m exploring a dark room, I will give it this though, I like how he has done the blog section, I think that cool.

I feel this portfolio works well due to the motion graphics and the personality of the portfolio. I’m not a big fan of using serif type so I wont go for it, I like this portfolio, It feels a little simple but it’s effective.

I do like how smooth this portfolio works, the scroll isn’t harsh but smooth. I maybe wouldn’t have my work in the middle, or maybe that’s the idea, work first, name second. The navigation on the side is strong, I can’t lie, I really like it. I’d worry how it looks on mobile though, I was so curious in fact I had to check and here it is.

Maybe I could do something similar but for the responsive aspect have the sidebar be at the top.

Firstly, This is incredible and impressive, It gets your attention easily, I like the 3D model, ages ago I made a low poly version of a brain which served as a logo for my website, I could definitely recycle it and give it some use! When I was thinking of having a portfolio, I had the idea of it scrolling sideways, but was worried how that would look, but through looking through Alex Chens, It works great.

This one, I made it on blender, so I can export it as .glb so it can be adapted to the web. I’m also thinking of maybe just redrawing it, cater it more to my Cv. See where it goes I suppose!

Sketching

Here is a rough sketching of the idea I have for my portfolio

Here is the home/introduction/greeting page, I just want it to say hello and be a little fancy, I’m fully aware that the main focus is the case studies, But I want the portfolio to be memorable as well!

As for the brain, it’s something I’m not fully committed too, I feel it would be better if it was an illustration as it would match the art style.

For the Work I want the XP bank project to be the front and centre as it is the one with the most notes, the last one will probably be AVA, Start strong, Finish Strong.

I want the XP to widen with the scroll and play a motion graphic, when you click one of the boxes it’ll take you to a case study part which will follow a typical document type.

I was considering combining contact and the about section, but I don’t know, I want to see what works better, But I want it to be horizontal. As for the text in these, It’ll probably be the same as my cv, maybe with some change.
