In this lecture we will be looking at how imagery and photography can give identity for a product/piece of art, you could illustrate a cake but a picture of a delicious cake would go even further in terms of meaning, say you are promoting a bakery, are you going to draw what the cakes look like or show photography of the actual cakes.

Product Photography

When you sell products, you need to have photography to help the audience know what they’re buying, to add on that a visual aesthetic can help sell as well, for example this Chilly’s advert uses photography in a visual aesthetic way by using symmetry, interesting design and colour contrast

Photography’s Role

It can be used in a number of ways such as:

1. It makes a product attractive and interesting

We looked at neighbourhood cafe’s photography and the aesthetic the photos help portray is that this is a lowkey chill cafe which is for young people, the photos had a heavy focus on the colour green which was to help convey the outdoors and nature message the brand wants to achieve, it also helped make the photos seem interesting with vines and bushes surrounding the cafe

2. Illustrate Ideas and Products

Apple took a photograph to show the size of the Mac Studio, and what they did was show the inside of it through transparency of the cover and photography, this how they show it is well designed the inside of it

3. Communicate their products

We were shown an example of BMW and how they show parts of their cars, BMW drivers want to know about the inside of the cars so they know what they’re paying for, photography is used well for this

4. Create a sense of brand identity and personality

We looked at Translink and how their use of photography isn’t great and doesn’t fit the brand or personality of the brand, often making mistakes in their photos by taking a shot of something that shouldn’t be there or taking photos that are unappealing, this is why hiring a professional photographer is key

We then looked at the royal scotsman another train company, And the photos that are taken look so much more appealing, The Royal Scotsman is a posh train service that serves meals and separate rooms, So the photos should reflect that which they do.

5. Enhance the UX by providing content or information
