Everything we do is storytelling, look to other media where stories are told to learn what rules exist. Once you know the rules you can begin to break them, Motion allows for so much more visual expression, pushing the boundaries of what you can do, nothing is out of reach.

Companies like Apple tell stories well, if you ever look at a product launch they do, it is very well done, Each product acts like a story

MacBook Pro

We’ve looked at animations and micro-interactions and their storytelling and Google for example tells a lot through it’s logo animation, showing playfulness, mic features, inclusivity and brand

Creating a World

You’re creating a world for a viewer to get lost in, we need to consider the backstory and how it impacts the user

Graphic Design as Storytelling

A well designed visual can simplify complexity, combining creativity with visual communication. We looked at Annie Atkins who works with Wes Anderson to design probs that help with the storytelling process, creating things in people’s hands, background props, which convey to whatever happens in the story. Flora Flicker is similar as well, working on major tv & movies and creating props for them

Sound and Narratives

This could be voice-overs, sound effects and music, which combined with visual design can help to improve the storytelling experience, This is something I hadn’t really thought of when designing my smart home project, and I’m thinking of maybe adding sound to pressing buttons, loading etc. It could really enhance the project itself and tell a story.

The right word may be effective, but no word was ever as effective as a rightly timed paused, think about the Jaws theme, which heightens suspense due to its flutes, brass and pauses.

Pauses in speech create emphasis, they convey emotion and allow the listener to absorb, comprehend and reflect on what was said, It becomes much richer as a story.

FIlm

Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add but when there is nothing left to take away

We need to decide sometimes whether something is really needed, and sometimes when were doing work we have something that is there because we like it. There is a lot of strength in slowing things down, whenever your thinking about the work, not everything needs to be presented, it doesn’t need to be a full on product. In film they do this all the time, often implementing less is more, not everything in a movie needs to be said, it can be shown, we watched a scene in the Godfather II where we saw how tension was made with emotions and the sound of the train riding along the carriageway

Colour and Contrast

A good example of using colour would be Schindler’s List, with only a few specific, poignant exceptions in colour. The colour highlights symbolise hope, individuality, or the transition from the past to the present, note
