This lecture focused on designing for the future, we looked at what people of the past thought the future would be like, but for the most part they were often wrong or filled with dread, but there were some things that came true with the rise of computers etc.
Speculative Design combines design thinking methods with the storytelling and future world building techniques of science fiction. also referred to as design fiction and incorporating other future studies practices such as critical design. Speculative designs purpose is to create prototypes of imagined future experiences to create wider discussion about what is possible by collectively redefining our relationship to reality
Think what could be possible, plausible, preferable and probable, Speculative Design:
It’s discussion, critical thinking on the present and innovation.
Traditional design would focus more on solving current problems, focusing on what the market needs, realistic solutions and overall a focus on usability and function, does this work?

The Drone Aviary Project - The Drone Aviary – an R&D project from The Superflux Lab – is an investigation of the social, political and cultural potential of drone technology as it enters civil space. Through a series of ongoing installations, films and publications, the project aims to give a glimpse into a near-future city co-habit with ‘intelligent’ semi autonomous, networked, flying machines.
