Bank Name Exercise

We started todays class by allowing others to vote on our brand names, Here were my 5, the first being Vaulture, BEAR and OMEN. I get why the name Vaulture is first, honestly I think people see the pun and go “oh that’s fine I guess” I like bear, but I fear it has no connotations towards banking, Omen was an underrated choice as you can see that as good fortune, Good omens etc, there are bad omens as well so maybe not a smart idea.

I then went on to say how I had another name in mind. Sentinel, or Centinel which was suggested by Declan. I like this name, it connotes strength, security but I’m still not settled on the name. I feel I need to spend more time on the project, and decide what this bank is going to be, then I can come up with a good idea for the name.

Type

“Typefaces are to the written word what different dialects are to different languages.” - Steven Heller

So this is saying if we have a language with a dialect, it’ll still be the same language but tone, words, slang will be different. letterforms were. developed as an alternative to the spoken word - from pictograms/icons to the alphabets we know today, that evolves from cavemen drawings to Egyptian hieroglyphics, advancing to letter press to the web.

99% of the time, your font will make the project and suit it to its style

“Typographical design should perform optically what the speaker creates through voice and gesture of his thoughts.” - El Lizzitsky

Tone of voice

Here is an example of tone of voice, we see on the left the font choice is romantic, happy almost cartoon like to connote a wholesome message. compared to the image on the right which is hand written by a monster almost, connoting an evil sinister message, this is why the tone of voice is always so important when selecting a font

A lot of brands had changed their own typeface as there was a modern trend, they did this as to appeal more modern, this didn’t really work all that well and a lot of the brands have reverted back to their original typeface

We then looked at a guide for typefaces and when to use appropriately

Here’s a useful website called fonts in use, it gives you examples of how fonts have been used in many different ways

Fonts In Use

Adobe and Google fonts will be helpful to find fonts, as well as to get the embedded code as well

in multiple typefaces there will be either some variation, no variation or a full variation. the one with the most variations typically will be the easiest to work with.
