His father was a sign painter in Germany and he had very interesting carer with calligraphy, worked under Paul Renner, we can see his work on gothic typefaces as well as modernist ones, his work was held by the Gestapo.

This was a term used by the Nazi’s to describe the art which was adopted to it’s name due to it’s punk nature, a lot of artists and key figures left Germany to the UK or America due to fear, resulting in a huge cultural shift to the US
