Storyboards

A good way to visualise ideas in a raw format, they are a linear sequence that is mainly illustrated that tell a story. They have been used since the 1920’s with Walt Disney making them popular.

If you think of UI/UX we build prototypes, designs that are sent to a developer who make it, that is our Job essentially, to make high resolution storyboards

Storyboards are powerful as they allow for visualisation, memorability, empathy and engagement. They tie user stories and user personas together.

Communication

When you look for storyboards online, they look really nice, You may think it needs to be drawn well, but this is not the case, As long as it communicates something that’s all that matters. A great example of this would be Goodfellas storyboard, In the scene where Joe Pesci’s character gets confrontational after being called funny. Scorsese just used stick men to storyboard what is happening in the scene

How to work out a story structure

Often a story follows the typical

Character → Scene → Plot → Narrative

Ensure to account for clarity, authenticity, simplicity and emotion.

You can use pain text and arrows to start:

Tom lives alone and is suffering from depression as he lost his job → Tom’s friend Susan finds out and wants to help → etc

They could be panels, so drawn out in a storyboard or in a comic book panel.

Frame your Design

We had an exercise where we had to storyboard, I enjoyed it, our group chose goal 8 and My idea was to create a website that would cater to the needs of an employee and teach the employer better ethics

  1. What problem are you trying to solve
  2. what are the possible solutions to your problem
  3. try to frame this a s a design question
  4. What are the constraints and controls you are facing?
