Resilience Talk

We started class with a talk about resilience and self-confidence

What is resilience?

Not giving up, being self-sustainable. It is the ability to bounce back when the wheels come off, it’s common to respond to stressful situations by burying your head in the sand, which is wrong, how should we respond to this?

Often times interviewers will ask to share a time that put you in a difficult situation and how did you deal with it. Essentially when things go unplanned how will you respond? Are you hiding in the sand or facing it?

Common Career concerns may be fear of losing your job, who your working with, your job being replaced etc.

Think about tough times in your life, think about

What happened?

How did you feel/respond?

What actions did you take?

What helped you move forward

Also consider:

What patterns did you notice in how you overcame those challenges

what strengths or resources appear often

how might you apply these strategies to future setbacks

Stress Triggers

often time we have triggers due to stress, this can be bad bowels, hives, sleep problems etc. This can be caused by anything as big as forgetting your laptop for a group project thats worth 20% of your grade, or as small as forgetting a pen.

It’s common to respond by hiding and stress eating etc. resilience is about avoiding difficulty it’s about dealing with the problem in a healthy way

Three Types of Resilience

Challenge - Resilient people see difficult things as a challenge to overcome
