So I occasionally drive to Belfast rather than getting the train as sometimes I stay over at a friends house, and they live near Ormeau Road which is a tricky place to get to if you haven’t done it before. So obviously I used Apple Maps to know where I’m going.
I drive a Hyundai i10 2012 model. It was originally my mothers and it is now passed down to me as my first car, it does the job but it has no Apple car play or any navigation features, the most technological advanced feature about my car is that there is a cd player. So in order for me to use maps I have to use my phone, now I won’t delve into why that’s a problem I’m just stating I need to use my phone for maps. I should also note I don’t have a phone holder for my car so I have to set it where my sunglasses box and change goes, just north of the gear stick.
So this is the problem. I can’t see the individual roads when driving look here at the photo. This is the M2 and from looking up close you can see it is leading to the York street exit which is what I want, but if you look from faraway it can seem as if the line is telling me to go to the docks instead.
One time I was driving home from Belfast met in millfield campus and I was new to driving on the M2 so of course I had no clue particularly with the Antrim roundabout that takes you on to the A26 now it says at the top to take the “second exit” but I’d argue that the destination is actually the third exit. So of course I trust my navigation direction and go to the second exit and before I knew it I was already half way across lough neagh…
I will praise Apple for telling the User the speed limit on the top of their map as I often forget when going to Coleraine what roads are 50/60 and 70. They do this very well and have a great colour contrast to do so
My point here is that maps should do everything to be clear and concise, how can this be done? Use of colour is important maybe you can use colour contrast to show what roads not to take or roads you could take to get there at a faster or slower rate updating with traffic constantly.
You could also ask the user how do you view the maps, do you view it on your phone or your CarPlay and by that the app can cater to your screen size for a safer and more clearer drive
Overall I would love to see Apple update their maps and add more personalisation to the app to help younger, experienced and older drivers be safer and faster at getting to their destination.
